Courses
Federal funds allocated from the US Department of Transportation are used to provide hazardous materials training to all first responders in the State of Illinois to include those public employees who may come across a hazardous material during the course of their work day. The training is designed to provide a base level of knowledge so that the first responder is safely able to protect him/her self and the general public. The funds are allocated to the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). Through these 3 Agencies, training is available to first responders free of charge.
The Hazardous Materials Awareness Training Program through IEMA was updated in January 2009. All IEMA Instructors were provided the new curriculum along with all new materials and tests. IEMA will provide an Update to the curriculum as the new ERG's are distributed (every 4 years).
Below you will find a list of the Hazardous Materials Awareness Training courses that are offered through IEMA. Click on a course title for a brief description of the course.
***Program News***
2009 Instructor Updates are required in order to teach the new curriculum provided by IEMA. If you are currently an IEMA instructor and you have NOT received the new 2008 hazardous materials awareness curriculum and training materials, you need to contact Janie Martin at janie.martin@illinois.gov.
Illinois State Police (ISP) has implemented a new online learning system that has the Hazardous Materials Awareness Refresher course available to most local law enforcement agencies. In the near future, this online Refresher will be available to anyone who wishes to take the course, but it has not been released as of now. We will update this Webpage when the online Refresher Course has been released. If you are Law Enforcement and have questions regarding this online Hazardous Materials Awareness Refresher Course, please contact the ISP Help Desk at 217/782-4155. If you are non-Law Enforcement and have questions, please contact Janie Martin at janie.martin@illinois.gov.

Emergency Response Guidebooks (ERG's)
To request the most current ERG's from IEMA, contact Janie Martin at janie.martin@illinois.gov. The ERG's are free to governmental emergency response agencies and emergency medical service agencies. IEMA will provide 1 ERG for each emergency response vehicle. If you have questions whether you qualify, please contact us.
