Dept on Aging Hosts Activities for Seniors & Their Families
at the Illinois State Fair

"Senior Day" is August 12 when admission is free for guests 60 years & older

SPRINGFIELD - August 5, 2013. Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) will again host activities for seniors and their families during the Illinois State Fair, August 8 - 18, in Springfield. IDoA will offer a special lineup of events in the senior center, which is the air conditioned setting of the Illinois Building located near the main gate of the fairgrounds. Attendees 60 years of age and older will be admitted free to the fair on Senior Day which is Monday August 12.

"Each year our staff and partners do a great job hosting activities and entertainment. I look forward to having fun while offering information about programs and services to benefit older adults and their families," said IDoA Director John K. Holton, Ph.D.

Some department programs include home and community assistance and services for reported cases of abuse through the newly created Office of Adult Protective Services.

(The full line up of IDoA activities follows this release). Some department favorites are scheduled on August 12 Senior Day, including the "NOT SO Newlywed Game" where couples, ages 50 years and older, test how much they really know about their spouse. Afterward, a seminar "Understanding Medicare" will be presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Then IDoA will host the Illinois Senior Spelling Bee State Finals. Winners from the regional competitions will attempt correctly spell words until judges crown a senior spelling bee champion. Families are encouraged to pre-register for the "Grandparent Grandchild Contest", when (on August 15) participants are judged on resemblance, costumes, talent and interviews. To pre-register, call (217) 785-3390.
